That's a Lot of Cell Phones!

According to this article, there are more cell phone subscriptions in Sweeden than people (9.07 million vs. 8.98 million). Wow! The article explains that this is likely due to the fact that most people have one cell phone for personal use and one for work. The tally for land line phones is only 5.4 million. I'm curious to know what the ratios for the US are, but I'm too lazy to do the research. It's amazing how cell phone usage has exploded over the past decade. It seems as though the Swedes are a bit more advanced than us. I also hear that cell phone technology is much more advanced in Europe.

Sky Calendar

Check out the Sky Calendar on space.com. It has a calendar of all events in the sky, including moon phases, sightings of planets, and other astronomical happenings. Too bad I don't have a telescope.

Speaking of heavenly bodies, hope you noticed my site redesign, featuring a setting summer sun (I took the header photo about two summers ago from my room in PA). I'm still working out some kinks with the site, so stay tuned.

Dog Delivers Mail

A cute story about a dog who delivers mail to his owner just started my day at work with a smile.

Have a great day, everyone!

IDEAs

There are some really innovative IDEAs here -- photos and descriptions for the winners of the 2004 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA). However, I disagree with the Scion xB, the boxy SUV-type car. It's similar to the Honda Element, which I also think is one of the ugliest vehicles on the market. I want to know where I can get some of this stuff!

Students Get Free iPods

In the fall, Duke University is giving incoming freshmen the newest Gen IV iPods, which will be used for educational and university-related purposes. I think this is a great way to use the devices! (via SlashDot) And how lucky are those students! This is a pilot program between Duke and Apple, and I can easily see this being adopted elsewhere. It seems quite expensive for the school, though.

The newest generation iPods look slick. I figured they'd adopt the same touchpad used on the mini's to the regular-sided Pods. Of course, I want an upgrade. Maybe mine will "break" and be covered under my Dell support plan. I really wish they would have software/firmware plug-ins or I could write custom applications for the little buggers. Right, like I'd find the time to do that. But, still, it'd be cool.

I Live in a Terrorist Plotting Town

From this article on the September 11th Commission report,

Sept. 7: Atta flies from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Baltimore, presumably to meet with hijack team staying in Laurel, Md.

I recently moved to Laurel. Crazy.

GWBisms

Below are a collection of, as Paula calls them, "GWBisms." She says,

All quotes are direct and unaltered. This is by no means an inclusive list, yet it still manages to convey the extreme idiocy of our commander-in-chief.

  1. "I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."
  2. "A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls."
  3. "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"
  4. "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
  5. "If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."
  6. "We're going to have the best educated American people in the world."
  7. "It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it."
  8. "I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family."
  9. "When I was coming up, it was a dangerous world, and you knew exactly who they were. It was us vs. them, and it was clear who them was. Today, we are not so sure who the they are, but we know they're there."
  10. "I think what's getting lost in this whole debate is this: Taking drugs is wrong."-[his answer to what the president should do about high prescription drug prices in the USA]
  11. "They misunderestimated me."
  12. "I've got a record, a record that is conservative and a record that is compassionated."
  13. "They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it's some kind of federal program."
  14. "We can't let this child come under the sway of an isolationist, tyrannical state led by a self-obsessed sociopath. By all means, send him back to Cuba."
  15. "An openly known homosexual is somebody who probably wouldn't share my philosophy."
  16. "There ought to be limits to freedom."
