Catastrophic Failure

Apparently, trying to use source control in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, which I've grown to know and love while working on my co-op project, produces a catastrophic failure:

Catastrophic Failure

But it's not catastrophic enough to close the application, just enough to make it impossible to function properly.

Mopeds and Microwaves

I saw two mopeds today. What gives? And of course, the drivers thought they owned the road and could cut across the street in front of traffic.

In other news, I picked up a microwave today from Josh. One came with his apartment, but he already had one. And it fits perfectly on my chrome microwave stand from Target that I had to search high and low for. And it even displays seconds for the clock time. Thanks Josh!

Oil

My jeep has a small oil leak and it requires me to keep on the oil level and refill it as necessary. I picked up two quarts at Mobile and they gave me a cute little disposable funnel. How convenient. Then I realized it was a good thing that they did give me that funnel because the spouts on the bottles were larger than normal. No spills!

Accomplishment

Though it may seem like little to some, I feel a sense of accomplishment today. I cooked a full meal, consisting of grilled marinated chicken, fresh green beans, and mashed potatoes (I cheated, they were instant). And I organized and sorted my MP3 collection of 8 GB and 2267 files, which I've wanted to do for years. *Pats self on back.*

Power Returned

We lost power in Rochester, as did much of the northeastern United States, yesterday. It happened just before 5:00 while I was at work. Obviously I couldn't do anymore work so I went home. The power in my apartment came back on at about 1:30 AM today, soon enough that everything in my refrigerator didn't spoil. It kept cold for quite a while. I was all ready to go to work this morning. I showered and started to make a lunch, but luckily I turned my computer on and happened to go to RIT's home page, only to find out that the school was closed for the day. I'm not complaining, I'm happy to have a Friday off. Woo hoo!

Burnt Toast

For the past three mornings on my way to work I've smelt burnt toast at one particular intersection. The odd part about it is that there are no restaurants in the general vicinity, only a few houses on one side of the intersection. Either someone really likes their toast (and doesn't know how to make it) or I'm smelling something else that reminds me of toast for some reason. This actually reminded me of last night at Friday's, one of the waitresses smelled cotton candy. Eventually, she discovered that the smell was coming from the soups area in the kitchen where the surface was burning underneath the soup containers. I didn't think it smelled like cotton candy, but whatever. Maybe this whole toast thing is just me.

Microsoft Windows: Insecure by Design (TechNews.com)

In light of all the recent viruses, here's a look at the vulnerabilities of Windows XP inherent in it's design and default configuration: Microsoft Windows: Insecure by Design (TechNews.com). But, in Microsoft's defense (though it really doesn't need it), the patches were issued a month before the attack and Microsoft products are attacked more often than those of other companies because it's used by so many people.

Stupid Parkers

I hate it when people don't know how to park and take up two good parking places, especially on a day like today when it's raining pretty hard. On the other hand, I love it when said people have tickets on their windshield for a parking violation. That gave me much satisfaction. I'm sick, I know.

Fired

No, I didn't get fired. But I successfully helped someone else get fired at Friday's. I have a sick feeling of satisfaction. A fellow busser was just a thorn in everyone's side -- uncooperative, lazy, bossy, slow, and had an attitude about everything. Even on a busy night, I'd rather be responsible for the entire restaurant than having to deal with him. Besides, if I have someone working with me, I get less tip money.

I've come to be well respected at Friday's. It's a good feeling when coworkers and managers treat you well, ask your advice, help you out, and show a genuine interest in you. It's also nice to know that people think you do good work and look forward to working with you ("Are you closing tonight?"; "Yes."; "Oh good!"). There are a lot of people who just do their job and don't really interact or have an attitude. It's those people that I just stay away from them.

And do I really look 19?! One server last night thought I wasn't "a day older than 19." I know I'm still a busser and all (which I don't mind), but still.

In other news, I'll be going home (to PA) this weekend and will be there all next week. Look out; here I come!

Retractable Air Compressor

I went to put some air in my tires today, because my talking tire pressure gauge, which my dad gave me for Christmas, told me that my tires were a little low on air. Sunoco had a retractable air compressor hose! This was a pleasant surprise because normally the hose is completely tangled and it's a pain to manage. And usually when it's time to wrap it up, I give up and leave it in a mess because I don't have the patience to do it properly. Anyway, head to your local Sunoco to try it out. Not available in all areas. See store for details. (Oh, but don't buy their gas because it's expensive!)
