Vanessa Carlton
I don't like much mainstream music these days. Most of the pop music they play on the mainstream radio stations -- owned and controlled by huge nation-wide broadcasting companies -- is crap. The way radio stations are operated these days sickens me. None of them have any character, you can go from town to town and they're all owned by one company -- no individuality. I tend to listen to the college stations these days. Their sound is fresh, unique -- and it allows me to expand my music-listening horizons and hear some of the music I like that the pop stations don't play. Anyway, when I first heard Vanessa Carlton's single "A Thousand Miles" from her debut album Be Not Nobody, I really liked the piano part. The lyric was nice, too, but it was the piano that caught my ear. So I genuinely liked the song. After discovering that she wrote both the music and lyric herself (for this song and most of the album) and it's her playing the piano at the ripe, young age of 21, I had much more appreciation for the song and Vanessa as an artist. She said in an interview:
I had always loved to sing growing up, but I never thought of myself as a singer until I sang my lyrics. I put my voice and piano together and I couldn't imagine it any other way.
I wouldn't want to hear the song any other way. When you're scanning through all of the crap-pop that's on the radio, stop the dial here. It's a good listen.
